Why a good ear cleaning can change your life

Why a good ear cleaning can change your life

Jerry thought it was water in his ear.

It was summertime and he’d been swimming with his kids in a swimming pool or lake nearly every day. At night when he lay down to sleep, he experienced a drip-like sensation in his ear. Sometimes, it was accompanied by vertigo.

He called his doctor. To his surprise, all of his symptoms were being caused by wax build-up in his ears.

Ear cleanings are part of good health

Ear cleanings are one of Avvy’s most popular services. They prevent infection, improve your hearing, and generally feel healthier with a professional ear cleaning.

The best part? Having a nurse conduct the procedure means it won’t cause any damage to the inside of your ears.

Can’t I just do it myself?

You could, but pushing the earwax back into your ears isn’t healthy. Using small picks and sticks–even commonplace tools like Q-tips, can also scratch the inner ear. Some audiologists recommend leaving the ears and allowing them to clean themselves for that reason.

However, there are instances where professional cleaning is recommended. Earwax is produced to keep the ears clean and to protect them from debris, dirt and bacteria, but sometimes there’s just too much build-up in the ears.

Going with a professional is the safest way to resolve this common health concern.

How can I tell if I need my ears cleaned?

It’s not always easy to tell when too much earwax is the culprit, but you may experience some of these symptoms:

  • Coughing
  • Hearing loss in one or both ears
  • Vertigo, dizziness, or poor balance
  • Earaches
  • Sensation of fullness or plugging of the ear
  • Phantom sounds, known as tinnitus

Don’t take our word for it

Ear cleaning videos have recently become popular on video-sharing sites like TikTok and Youtube. They’re not quite as gory as pimple popping, but they’re not always for the faint of heart.

If you’re curious, here are some of our favourites.

Isn’t there something satisfying about watching a healthcare professional resolve a common health concern?
