Regular blood tests: One key to good health

Regular blood tests: One key to good health

Blood tests are among the most versatile medical tools with a variety of applications to your health.

Depending on the requisition, blood tests can be used to:

  • Assess whether you have an infection
  • Determine how well certain organs, such as your liver and kidneys, are functioning
  • Identify your susceptibility for certain genetic conditions
  • Detect the presence of diseases such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, anemia or coronary heart disease
  • Gauge your risk of heart disease
  • Check how well your blood is clotting
  • Evaluate your overall general health, such as blood count or hormone levels

Prevention is key

Some of the most interesting healthcare research being conducted in the twenty-first century focuses on preserving health and wellbeing while preventing clinical conditions from developing.

How does it work?

Following a visit with your doctor or other healthcare professional (e.g., a nurse practitioner), you’ll be given a requisition for the specific blood tests you require. Take a photo of the requisition or save the digital file to upload when booking your appointment.

Sharing the requisition with us helps your Avvy healthcare practitioner to prepare for the appointment so that he or she can select the equipment to support your needs.

We retain the requisition until your blood sample has been delivered to the nearest laboratory for testing. Once that’s done, the requisition is destroyed to protect your privacy.

The laboratory will send your test results to your doctor or healthcare provider directly. Avvy will not be informed about your results.

I’m too scared to take a blood test

Fear of needles is understandable and a relatively commonplace phobia. At the same time, avoiding a blood draw may prevent you from accessing important information about your health.

If you’re concerned about getting blood taken, speak to your Avvy healthcare provider upon arrival about your concerns. Don’t worry about being embarrassed: your care and comfort is our biggest priority.

Give examples about past experiences, and be sure to let us know if you’ve ever felt faint or nauseated. If you find it easier to lie down, ask for that accommodation and we’ll be happy to assist you.

Unless fasting is required for your blood requisition, make sure that you eat something ahead of the appointment. Take your time after the appointment to make sure you feel well enough to resume your normal activities.
